Who, exactly, is the GOP trying to help?
Attacking social programs once again, the Republicans are trying to set strict caps in the amount of food assistance given to families under the poverty line. The bill in question, HR 1135, is "to provide an overall spending limit on means-tested welfare programs." However hunger relief groups are decrying the bill as unacceptably harming children.
"Lisa Davis, vice president of policy at Feeding America, said 44 million people participate in food stamps each month – the figure increased 62 percent between 2007 and 2009.
"'Any kinds of changes that start to weaken the food safety net are going to increase the burden on
communities across America,' she said, noting that half of all beneficiaries of food stamps are children."
Right. Because a recession during a time of climbing food prices is the time to start cutting back on food stamp services. Right?
Pfffft. One hopes this particular crapislation gets tossed and we perhaps cut costs in terms of how many bombs we drop in the Middle East
