Speculation has been running rampant for months that the openly lesbian US Representative Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) would be running for the Senate seat now held by retiring Democrat Herb Kohl. She announced today that she would indeed be seeking election for that seat. If she wins, she will become the first gay member of our highest legislative body.
Gay advocates are gearing up for the fight,with the Victory Fund proudly throwing their support behind her candidacy:
“Helping to elect America’s first openly LGBT U.S. senator isn’t going to be easy. Tammy is still the only out lesbian ever to serve in Congress, so you can bet anti-gay extremists will be working overtime to keep her from winning. But every time they attack, we’ll be there to help Tammy fight back, and we need you standing with us too.”I'm hopeful for the race. I'm looking forward to having our first lesbian US Senator.
