OneAngryCultist: The Spirit of Occupy - Witness Under Fire

Tuesday was a day in which I witnessed first-hand the Occupy community of Seattle undergo a rebirth, a baptism of sorts, as well as possibly one of the most atrocious acts of brutality against demonstrators during which many non-violent demonstrators were indiscriminately pepper-sprayed including a blind woman, a priest, a non-denominational chaplain, a pregnant woman as well as friends and acquaintances caught in the cross-fires.

Although I was blocked off from being able one of those caught in the fray due to an ill-timed restroom break, when I was able to catch up to the group the first thing I saw was people corralled between Battery and Wall Street on Third Avenue and the first person I met coming out of that was Reverend Rich Lang of University Methodist Temple in the University District; the same man I had been walking alongside earlier as an individual clergy person representing my own gnostic, religious tradition of Thelema. His face was red and tears were coming from his eyes and he was still determined. It was later that I would find out exactly what happened, but seeing his dedication and witness made a very clear impact on me.

The next morning, I woke up and read the following missive that he had written in response to the events that transpired that day, A Pastoral Lament For My Country:

“I praise the courage and compassion, the discipline and the decency of the Occupy Movement. Out of the rag-tag mob came help, grabbing my hands, leading me (I was blind by then) to the wall and administering care and concern for my well being. The protesters were assembled around all the wounded, and maintained the discipline of nonviolence (granted the nonviolence was in behavior but not language). And they were not afraid. The spraying had been a baptism sealing them into the security of knowing that their prophecy of repentance was indeed the Spirit-Word through them --- it is as if they did not prophecy their very bones would melt within them. Against the wall in increasing pain and burning I realized I was in the midst of church.”

Reverend Rich is but one of the chaplains and religious who were pepper-sprayed that day, the other being Tsukina Blessing, amidst many others of varying religious and non-religious stripes gathered as a community to demonstrate against this country’s grave social and economic inequalities. In the course of that baptism by pepper-spray, Occupy ceased being a group of rag-tag demonstrators and transformed into an ekklesía - a community of believers – indeed, a church.

Although some may object to my overt use of religious language in describing Occupy, the fact is that we are all here in faith that we can restore some level of sanity to this country that has for too long strayed away from its true course and which we are all determined to bear witness to and restore to the brightness and wholeness that is capable of being – in Christian terms, “a city on the hill” for all to see and share in its blessings. In Occupy I have seen proof that in this movement there are many mansions to be found in every tent and every committee meeting and there is room at every table. This is what America can look like and what we are all fighting for.

Rev. Rich and Tsukina are true spiritual warriors, among the many participating in Occupy across the country. They are inspirations of endeavor and I admire them and all clergy, chaplains and participants in Occupy. Their demonstration of peace under fire is something, I think, all occupiers can learn from and put into practice and something that will make the movement succeed and prosper even more.

Petition: Appoint An LGBT Youth Advisor

Caleb Laieski, a courageous young man who left school at the age of 16 in order to become a youth advocate for LGBT teens, has taken his crusade against bullying all the way to Congress.  When I first met Caleb, he was getting ready for the day to lobby Congresspeople for anti-bullying measures.

Now he's handing around an online petition urging the President to appoint an LGBT Youth Advisor at the White House in order to work on issues that specifically affect high-school age LGBTs:
Urge the Obama Administration to appoint a youth advisor to work with the administration on the everyday emotional and complex issues that LGBT youth face.
In the past couple of years, our country has seen a tremendous swing in regards to the acceptance of minority groups, but research and statistics still show that LGBT youth are going through personal struggles both at school and at home. Some of these struggles consist of bullying, drug abuse, homelessness, isolation and even suicide.
According to PFLAG, approximately 30% of gay and lesbian youth drop out of school due to hardships from physical and verbal abuse. This statistic is caused by the lack of support and intervention for LGBT students by teachers and school administrators. Additionally, the few teachers that would like to intervene often do not have the proper training on how to intervene in anti-LGBT bullying.

Gay Iranians Come Out On Facebook

Iran recently executed three men for the crime of sodomy, which is defined as "sexual intercourse between men," which is in sharp contrast to President Ahmadinejad's assertion that Iran doesn't have gay people.  With this hypocritical departure to the official Iranian stance, gay Iranians have decided to take matters into their own hands and tell the world in a manner that brooks no disagreement: gay Iranians exist.
A group of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Iranians have posted videos of themselves on Facebook in a campaign to highlight the discrimination against sexual minorities in Iran where homosexuals are put to death.
Hundreds of Iranians in and outside the country have joined a Facebook page, called "we are everywhere", which encourages members to share their personal stories online. Members of the campaign in Iran have posted audio messages or videos which do not reveal their identity while some outside talked about their sexual orientation freely.
I perused the wall and photos, and they are filled not just with proud statements of Iranians, but statements of support from all over the globe.

Congratulations to the citizens of Iran, and Iranians elsewhere in the world, on taking a stand against homophobia in your home country.

Jesus, Barron. Really?

GOProud's own personal PR nightmare, President Chris Barron, struck again one Twitter yesterday as he took to the Interwebs to protest Michele Bachmann's linking to the teen suicide epidemic in her district.  Many of those suicides were gay or bullied on the perception of sexual orientation, and that has some concerned that Bachmann and her anti-gay allies in the area are fostering a climate of discrimination.

So the ever-thoughtful Barron made this unfortunate comparison in response, once again linking GOProud's name with the craziest person possible:

First, there's a big difference between gonorrhea and hanging yourself because you don't want to live, Chris.  Second?  Pelosi actually supports safe-sex initiatives.  She even paints it in terms that you might understand, saying that promoting contraception cuts on costs:
"Well, the family planning services reduce cost. They reduce cost. The states are in terrible fiscal budget crises now and part of what we do for children's health, education and some of those elements are to help the states meet their financial needs. One of those - one of the initiatives you mentioned, the contraception, will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government."
Has Bachmann provided any examples of how she is defeating the problem of teen suicide in her district?

This Happened On Twitter

I love that Cher is getting involved and weighing in on Marcus Bachmann's ex-gay ways, but at this point, I'm not even sure what she's talking about:

Thanks Cher!  I think.

No, Facebook Isn't Announcing To The World Who Your Booty Calls Are

I'm seeing all over Facebook and Google Plus that Facebook has now aggregated a list of all the numbers in your mobile phone.  Basically, if you have a mobile app, Facebook is grabbing all those numbers and making them convenient to you.  Everyone from my hairstylist to Tom Anderson is being a bit alarmist about it, claiming that this is a blatant violation of user privacy, with some even claiming that you can view other people's contact lists.

NOT SO.

From the NYT:

"Meredith Chin, a spokeswoman for Facebook, explained that this feature was neither new nor altered. 'We’ve had this for quite some time,' she said. Facebook issued a statement on its site that reads: 'Rumors claiming that your phone contacts are visible to everyone on Facebook are false. Our Contacts list, formerly called Phonebook, has existed for a long time. The phone numbers listed there were either added directly to Facebook and shared with you by your friends, or you have previously synced your phone contacts with Facebook. Just like on your phone, only you can see these numbers.'"

"Facebook is doing a couple of things by merging contacts: it’s trying to provide a convenience to users ('Hey look! We pulled all these phone numbers together for you in one place!') and in doing that, it’s clearly trying to become the center of all your communication needs (see: the new Facebook Messenger app, introduced Tuesday). By collecting all this information, Facebook is most likely hoping it can take over spaces currently occupied by companies like AOL (via its AIM instant-message service),Skype, GroupMe and even telephone and e-mail providers."

I actually thought it was kind of neat.  I scrolled through the list on my own settings to see who I hadn't talked to in a while.

So calm the fuck down, people.

Fred Karger Wants To Play, Too!

Fred Karger is like the Little Engine That Could-- no matter how steep that climb to the White House may seem for the gay Republican candidate for President, he just keeps on tryin'.

His latest obstacle is Fox News.  He is trying his damnedest to participate in the Presidential debates being televised on America's "Fair and Balanced" news network, but appears to be black-balled due to the fact that no-one seems to know who he is.  He recently sent out an e-mail celebrating that he met the minimum poll requirements to take part in the debate, but Fox News is invalidating his candidacy, stating that the poll data is from online questionnaires and doesn't really count.

So what recourse does Fred have?  I know!  A Change.org petition!

Both Dan Choi and myself have signed this petition asking Fox News to allow Fred Karger to participate in the debate.  Why?  Not because I think he has an icicle's chance in hell of being selected as the GOP candidate for President.  I believe that the more dissenting ideas in the movement there are, the more discussion we have, and the greater chance we have of coming up with real solutions.

Plus, having a queermo gaylord up on stage with Michele Bachmann really tickles my pickle.  So sign!

Newt's Tweeters Is Followed By A Bunch Of Fakes

Newt Gingrich has led, thus far, a troubled Presidential campaign highlighted by glitter-bombing and mass staffer resignations, but he wants you to know he's still a winner!  The proof?  He's got more Twitter followers than any of the other candidates!

"And it says, 'now it's true that Gingrich has 1.3 million followers and (Michele) Bachmann only has 59,000, but she's getting more new people every week.' It turned out I have six times as many Twitter followers as all the other candidates combined, but it didn't count because if it counted I'd still be a candidate; since I can't be a candidate that can't count. So we've been a little bit like a sailing ship in the middle of a hurricane in which we are sailing straight into the teeth of the media, and that slowed us down."
Er.  Except he really doesn't-- because most of his followers are fake accounts created by his campaign.

"Newt employs a variety of agencies whose sole purpose is to procure Twitter followers for people who are shallow/insecure/unpopular enough to pay for them. As you might guess, Newt is most decidedly one of the people to which these agencies cater.

"About 80 percent of those accounts are inactive or are dummy accounts created by various 'follow agencies,' another 10 percent are real people who are part of a network of folks who follow others back and are paying for followers themselves (Newt's profile just happens to be a part of these networks because he uses them, although he doesn't follow back), and the remaining 10 percent may, in fact, be real, sentient people who happen to like Newt Gingrich. If you simply scroll through his list of followers you'll see that most of them have odd usernames and no profile photos, which has to do with the fact that they were mass generated. Pathetic, isn't it?"

Pathetic indeed.  Sure, I'm always scrounging to get more Twitter followers to hawk my schlock, but I would never pay for them.  That may just be because Newt has the budget for that and I don't... maybe I should form a PAC...

Congressman Allen West Gets Cranky, E-mails Ridic Tirade To Coworker

I once got fired in a corporate environment for calling someone a "dumbass" using company e-mail.  Luckily for Representative Allen West (R-FL), he gets to keep his job after firing off a monumental hissy fit to DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz after she repeated Democratic stances regarding his attacks on Medicare.  She made the statements after he had left the House floor, and boy did he get mad!  First, her remarks on the floor via Politico:

"'The gentleman from Florida. who represents thousands of Medicare beneficiaries, as do I, is supportive of this plan that would increase costs for Medicare beneficiaries, unbelievable from a Member from South Florida,' Wasserman Schultz said, saying the legislation 'slashes Medicaid and critical investments essential to winning the future in favor of protecting tax breaks for Big Oil, millionaires, and companies who ship American jobs overseas.'

"Her criticism of the legislation -- more or less what most Democrats are saying today -- provoked a furious response. West copied members of House Republican and Democratic leadership on the email, as well as his chief-of-staff, Jonathan Blyth."

His e-mail is TRULY hilarious.  He calls her vile, despicable, and then tells her she is NOT a Lady.

"Look, Debbie, I understand that after I departed the House floor you directed your floor speech comments directly towards me. Let me make myself perfectly clear, you want a personal fight, I am happy to oblige. You are the most vile, unprofessional ,and despicable member of the US House of Representatives. If you have something to say to me, stop being a coward and say it to my face, otherwise, shut the heck up. Focus on your own congressional district!

"I am bringing your actions today to our Majority Leader and Majority Whip and from this time forward, understand that I shall defend myself forthright against your heinous characterless behavior……which dates back to the disgusting protest you ordered at my campaign hqs, October 2010 in Deerfield Beach.

"You have proven repeatedly that you are not a Lady, therefore, shall not be afforded due respect from me!"

Golly gee whiz!  Did he really tell Debbie to shut the heck up?  Such shocking language!

Aside from the fact that he chose to criticize her ladyhood, thus reinforcing stereotypical ideals of how a lady should behave, he is overreacting, using childish language, and being incredibly unprofessional.  Plus, I laughed super hard at his e-mail.  I kinda want to get elected to office just so I can piss him off and watch my e-mail inbox fill up with his hilarious batshittery.

Worst Garage Sale Ever

You would think that people attempting to sell their shit and make a mint would accept anybody's money, but one Craigslist yard sale announcement is shooting themselves in the foot and e-mailing inquirers that they only want a certain type of people at the garage sale.  Actually, they just don't want certain types of people at their garage sale: Muslims, undocumented immigrants, and gays.

Evidently response was so overwhelming that they felt the need to e-mail querents the following disclaimer:

"additionally, there will be a garage sale this sunday, 17 july 2011 from 11am – 7pm, for the items already pictured in the album and more. photos will continue to be added via the mobile pix facebook album, so please also check there as internet access has already been disconnected in the home and it’s the only way to upload quickly and easily. all are welcome to the moving sale / garage sale except for LGBT people, illegal immigrants, and muslims, anyone else is warmly welcomed! no drama, terrorism, or illegal transactions with non-US citizens / illegal immigrants / people taking jobs away from people who belong and are legal in this country is desired. thanks."

Dumbasses!  Gays don't go to garage sales!  We would only show up if you were calling it an "estate sale" or a "sample sale."  Also, you are douchebags.

Twitter Awesomeness: Bette Midler Vs. Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga ruffled the feathers of another gay icon (with, I would argue, far more homocred than the young diva) by appearing on stage in a mermaid costume while singing from a wheelchair.  While differently-abled activists got upset at the appearance, Gaga also pissed off the incomparable Bette Midler, who had first debuted her "Delores Delago" character, the marine songstress who sings while on wheels, over three decades ago.

Potential Employers May Screen Your Social Media History

The advent of Google+ has social media addicts (including myself) scrambling to sign up for the internet giant's response to Facebook, Gizmodo brings some interesting developments to light about what a potential employer can find out about you via your Facebook habits.

Basically, there exists a company, Social Intelligence, which goes through seven years of your social media history in order to identify if you have habits (think racist ideology or illegal sex acts) that could cause you to be a legal liability to your prospective boss.  It then gives you a pass/fail grade and forwards the information to the entity in question.  If you fail, you can request a copy of the report.

The writer of the article failed the test, and requested the report.  What I found somewhat reassuring was the extent to which the service attempted to preserve personal information, to include racial identity, in order to give the screened subject as much privacy as possible.  Also, since the search is in no way automated, the service's team can make very human distinctions between silly goof-off photos and actual dangerous behavior.

I might be in trouble.

Why did the writer fail the test?  Because of drug references the author had made online.  So don't worry, the wet t-shirt contest you participated in during your college years won't impact your future employment, but if you're trolling online for weed, you might just have a problem.

Would you pass?

Gaydar Offers Marcus Bachmann Free Membership

Citing Mr. Bachmann's recent "popularity" with gay blogs across the country recently, self-describe gay dating mega-site Gaydar.net has offered the aspiring First Mister a free lifetime membership.

"Marcus Bachmann is popping up on everyone else’s gaydar, we figure he might want to be on the real Gaydar! With over six million members, we like to think Gaydar is the picture of inclusivity–from swarthy barbarians to piggy politicos–all are welcome!"

Nice.

Orlando Activists Shrug Off Arrests, Continue Feeding Homeless

Food Not Bombs continues to do amazing work in Orlando despite having been arrested some weeks ago for distributing food to people without a permit, as they fed about 100 people at City Hall on the Fourth of July.  Their usual site and location of their arrests is Lake Eola, which they avoided on Independence Day to spare the homeless that come for food the throngs that gather there on the Fourth.

Their arrest has raised the ire of some high profile groups, with famed online hacktivism group Anonymous targeting Orlando tourism sites.  Food Not Bombs moved their operation to the City Hall at the invitation of the Mayor.

"'What happened was, Mayor [Buddy] Dyer was quoted as saying that he offered to let Food Not Bombs gather at City Hall any time they like, and he'd donate some of the peppers he grows on his mayoral balcony to the chili pot,' Markeson said. 'So, we wanted to see if he would live up to his word.'

"Markeson added that while mayor did not make an appearance on Monday, they were not harassed by police and 'at least 100' people turned out for oatmeal, grits, pancakes, potatoes, bread and coffee.

"He also said that City Hall had not been used in the past because it lacks easy access to basic sanitation facilities, unlike the public park which has running water outdoors."

However, the organization has vowed to not be deterred with the draconian arrests of their organizers, promising to return to their Lake Eola venue.  They are urging attendees to bring cameras in case someone tries to arrest them.

We Need To Talk

I love DYAC (Damn You AutoCorrect), which can always get me shrieking with laughter.  Yes, yes, I'm a screamer.  I found this one particularly funny.

Santorum Supports Federal Marriage Ban

Rick "Frothy Mix" Santorum brought his crazy to John King and has now stated his support for a federal amendment banning marriage equality.

"I support a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage. I believe that marriage should be a consistent thing across the country. Marriage is the union of one man and one woman...Once people realize the consequence to society of changing this definition — it’s not that we’re against anybody. People can live the life they want to live. They can do whatever they want to do in the privacy of their home with respect to that activity. But now you’re talking about changing the laws of the country. and it's gonna have a profound impact on society, on faith, on education. And once people realize that, they say, you know what, we respect people’s right to live the life they want to lead but don’t try to fundamentally change how society functions by changing that definition."

Rick recently also got on the teevees to whine about his... um... name problem.

Which, dear reader, do you think is more vile... destroying gay families, or being called poopy lube?
